Police, ambulance and three fire and rescue units, from Lockerbie and Annan, responded to emergency calls from other motorists on the busy route.
The south-bound carriageway incident happened near the Queens Hotel and close to Junction 18 (Lockerbie South) around 4.30 pm.
A Dacia Duster 4×4 vehicle, driven by a 40-year-old man from Hebdon Bridge, ended up high on a roadside embankment while the Skoda car, driven by a 72-year-old woman from Edinburgh, came to a halt on another slope amongst roadside trees.
The woman motorist was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment for a head injury but later allowed home.
There was only limited disruption to traffic on the southbound carriageway.
