THERE may still be 16 weeks until Christmas but already the annual primary school Xmas Factor competition has been launched.
Organised by Gretna Gateway Outlet Village and Westsound, the event is open to primary schools across Dumfries and Galloway.
Groups of youngsters with an ear for music are encouraged to start practising Christmas classics in a bid to win a £500 cheque for their school and a special trophy.
Lisa McNab, of Gretna Gateway, explained they have already had schools expressing an interest.
And she said: “We’re constantly amazed by the talent and dedication shown by teachers and pupils alike and know that our shoppers greatly look forward to the grand final of the event each year.
“As well as the £500 in prize money, this is a great experience for the children and the communities that get behind them to vote for their entries, so we would like to encourage as many schools as possible to sign up this year.”
A shortlisted group of ten entries will go to a public vote to decide which five will compete for the £500 top prize in the live grand final at the border shopping centre on Sunday December 11.
The current title-holders are Kirkcudbright Primary School, who impressed last year’s judges with their performance of Silent Night.
Schools have until 16 September to register their intention to enter and they must choose one carol from a list of eight and send an audio recording of their performance to the competition organisers in advance of the November 8 deadline.
