Police probe suspicious blaze

A FIRE in Gretna is being treated as suspicious by police and fire service investigators.

The outbreak took place at an empty house on Esk Road sometime before 10 am on Sunday.

A burning item was set alight and pushed through a broken window.

Constable Clare Cavanagh, based at Gretna, said: “While the house was empty, no-one is living there just now. This was a reckless and very stupid act of fire-raising.

“The consequence could have been tragic had the fire taken hold.

“This happened in broad daylight and we are appealing for anyone who may have been around in the Esk Road area on Sunday morning get in touch if they saw or heard anything suspicious.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews were called out and, after extinguishing the blaze, it became clear that the fire appeared to have been started deliberately.

The property was slightly damaged in the fire.

Anyone with information should contact to Police Scotland on the 101 number or if they wish to remain anonymous on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
