Lewis Fergusson has written and released ‘Time to Give’ for the festive season and is hoping for local support as the song is now available to download.
The dad-of-one says he has always had a soft spot for a good Christmas song and it was last year that he started writing his own.
Speaking from his Halleaths home, which he shares with his partner Somar Clark and their two-year-old son Hugo, the 37-year-old said: “It all sparked off when I came up with a guitar riff in 2015 that, to me, sounded like a Christmas jingle.
“I half wrote the song and put it aside until I was asked to write a Christmas song for a Christmas event that was being held at the newly refurbished Theatre Royal in Dumfries.”
Explaining the meaning behind the tune, Lewis said: “It’s not until the song is finished and it settles that the meaning starts to come through.
“Meanings can also evolve over time.
“This song has so many meanings I think because Christmas means so many different things to so many different people.”
When asked where he sees his song in the future, he said: “It’s just an exciting project with a bit of Christmas fun about it.
“Who knows where it will go?
“If Bob Dylan covered it that would be a real privilege, and it would be good to get Santa’s nod of approval!”
For Lewis the song is more about giving, not getting; holding a neighbourly ethos and sparing a thought for those who don’t have much, amongst other things.
As well as writing music Lewis loves performing live with his guitar and has performed in local festivals and venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
His biggest claim to fame, he says, was performing two of his own songs live on STV earlier this year.
He launched his first EP in 2010 at the Brigend Theatre, Dumfries, and has supported folk legends Mike Heron and Dick Gaughan and Adam Ficek from the Babyshambles.
