£23 million cost of running local NHS frontline

GP SERVICES in the region cost £23.8 million to run last year, it has been revealed.

There are currently 33 practices in Dumfries and Galloway and 130 GPs working locally, of which 55 are female and 75 are male.

Each surgery has, on average, 4672 patients on their list although numbers can vary between urban and rural doctors.

And NHS Dumfries and Galloway received £23.8m to allocate in 2016-17. Furthermore, 13 practices got an extra payment for offering dispensing services, ranging from £24,203 up to £581,789

The biggest payments in Dumfriesshire were over £1 million and went to surgeries located in Dumfries.

Of those, the largest was £1.7 million for Gillbrae Medical Practice. Conversely, Canonbie Surgery received £343,976.

According to the national figures released by ISD Scotland, as of September 30 2016, there were 4913 GPs working in general practice in Scotland throughout 966 surgeries.

And the NHS paid those surgeries £798.4m in total.
