£31k grant will help kickstart autistic centre plan

A FORMER police station in Kirkcudbright is set to be transformed into a dedicated support centre for young autistic people, thanks to a £31,000 grant from Crown Estate Scotland.

The project, led by the local group Resonate: Creating Communities, aims to turn the former station into a welcoming space focused on mental health and well-being.

Founder Catherine Phillips said: “We are incredibly grateful to Crown Estate Scotland. Having this support at this stage of the project is absolutely vital to assist with initial costs, and will not only provide practical financial assistance, but will also help in our efforts to attract more funders to give us their backing.”

The funding comes from Crown Estate Scotland’s Community Capacity Grants, part of the wider Sustainable Communities Fund. The funds seek to provide funding that the groups may have a hard time raising in the early stages.

The Kirkcudbright centre is one of nine community-led initiatives across Scotland sharing nearly £300,000 in the latest round of awards. This year’s grant winners focused on converting neglected properties into spaces for public use, tourism, or affordable housing.
