Region provides rally stop

COMPETITORS in the world’s oldest car rally passed through the region this week.

And among the drivers in the 2024 Monte Carlo Historic were two Castle Douglas GPs.

Dr Neil Oliver and Dr Alastair Gair are taking part in a 1968 Volvo 123 GT, above, and fundraising for the Anne Rowling Clinic.

Another entry is a 1966 Volvo Amazon belonging to former Gretna couple George and Rosalind Topp, who now live in France.

The cars started in Glasgow on Wednesday and the route brought them to Dumfries, where a passage control took place at the Woodlands House Hotel. Then it was to Gretna, Penrith, down through England and over to Calais.

The endurance event has several different start points across Europe but the 250 competing crews will all converge in the Alps for the final competitive runs over snow and ice covered roads before the finish in Monte Carlo.
