£7 million pricetag for estate

A HISTORIC estate at Gatehouse of Fleet has gone on the market for offers over £7 million.

Cally Estate runs to 1125 hectares and includes the three farms of Murrayton, Culreoch and Lagg, which are run as livestock enterprises.

The Big Water of Fleet and The Little Water of Fleet flow through the Estate with fishing rights, while there are 100 hectares of broadleaved trees, plus 40 of conifers.

There are also further diverse farming, forestry, residential and sporting opportunities on the estate.

Of the five properties, Murrayton Farmhouse is the principal residence.

It has been held by the same family, the Murray Ushers, since the 18th century.

Their story began with James Murray, born in 1727, after whom it passed through generations. Elizabeth Evelyn Murray Usher inherited it in 1924 and made the pragmatic decision to sell off vast portions. However, she remained committed to the area and established the first tourist information centre in Gatehouse of Fleet and served on the town council, recognised with an OBE.

Her son James duly inherited it, passing it to his son/her grandson Peter Murray Usher in 2007. Since his premature death in 2011 his widow Jane has run the estate.

Agents Goldcrest, who are handling the sale, said: “Today, the Cally Estate stands as a testament to the Murray Usher family’s enduring influence.

“The core estate is now a commercially viable business providing a mixture of upland hill grazing, lower/cropping grazing, forestry, stalking, rough shooting and fishing.

“Cally Estate is more than just a residence; it’s a living piece of Scottish history.”
