The Met Office alert indicated up to 10 cm falling on high ground with between one and three centimetres accumulating at lower levels.

There was a light covering of snow in the east of the region, including at Annan and Dumfries, early in the afternoon and Police Scotland urged motorists to take extra care.

WINTER HAZARD . . . a driver cautiously navigates his way along Lockerbie Road, Dumfries on Saturday evening

On Saturday evening drivers were warned to take particular care with snow affecting the M74, the A76, routes in Eskdale and the Dumfries to Lockerbie road.

Snow ploughs could soon be seen across the region, as a sudden cold snap brings heavy snowfall

A spokesman said: “We’re urging drivers to slow down and to drive according to conditions.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council gritter crews were working on the worst affected routes.

And teams of council staff and contractors were out on Sunday removing ice from roads and pavements.

Meanwhile, a number of football and other sporting fixtures were postponed due to sub-zero temperatures  on Saturday while the scheduled Friday night greyhound racing meeting at Gretna’s Halcrow Stadium was also cancelled.
