Random acts of kindness urged in Moffat

A BE Lovely Day encouraging random acts of kindness as an antidote to the January blues is being encouraged in Moffat this Saturday.

Moffatonian Tina Fox is hoping that her town will get behind the message this weekend and spread the love.

The idea was first thought up in 2012 and launched by Tina’s Liverpool based singer songwriter niece Jodie Schofield.

But what started as something to cheer up Jodie’s circle of friends and family has become a global event, with people as far as the USA, New Zealand and Australia taking part and sharing kind words and deeds.

This year’s day will be the fourth and Jodie hopes even more lovely people will get involved.

She said: “Ambassadors across the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will be putting smiles on faces in a traditionally miserable time of the year.

“People forget how easy it is to brighten a day up for themselves and for someone they know or even just interact with – it could be the bus driver you see on the way to work who you smile at or someone you pass in the street and say ‘that’s a great dress.”

Jodie decided January would be the perfect month as everyone struggled with a postChristmas and New Year anti-climax. Jodie is a frequent visitor to her aunt Tina’s home town of Moffat so she thought that it would be great if the idea could take root there and spread out to the rest of Scotland.

Tina plans to kick off Be Lovely Day by visiting two local charity shops and dropping off sweets.

She said: “Having lived both sides of the border I personally feel people in Scotland are more naturally compassionate and kind and always willing to give their time, so I think that can be built on and I would urge Moffat residents to perhaps bake a cake for an elderly neighbour or offer to shop for them and even the school kids could perhaps do something nice for their parents.

“Just giving someone a compliment or holding a door for them can really make someone’s day, let’s just see what Moffat can do.”
