College closed after floods

On Wednesday part of the campus building was affected by water pouring off the fields across Bankend Road and accumulating at the corner of the building where the workshops are located.
Areas affected included the motor vehicle, brickwork, joinery, electrical installation, painting and decorating workshops, some classrooms, and staff work areas. The car park and bus turning circle were also flooded.
Staff and students were sent home for health and safety reasons and the decision was taken to shut the college until next week.
Principal Carol Turnbull said: “An initial review has been undertaken, with further work carried out yesterday now that the water has receded, and clearing up has begun.
“Staff are working as normal, but as we have limited catering arrangements, and some areas of the college are unusable, we took the decision to suspend all classes until Monday.”
She is keeping an eye on the short term weather forecast and added: “We expect to be operating as normal for all students from Monday, provided there is no further flooding over the weekend – more heavy rain is forecast.”
