Time to turn out the lights

MILLIONS of people across the world- including locally- will take part in the global Earth Hour phenomenon tonight.

At 8.30 pm this evening all participants will switch off their lights for an hour to show they care about the future of the planet.
The symbolic gesture aims to spotlight the issues facing the world.
Dumfries and Galloway Council are taking part and the lights will go out at headquarters in English Street from Friday night to Monday night.
Councillor Colin Smyth is chairman of the authority’s environment committee and said: “We are proud to take part in WWF’s Earth Hour and are excited to be involved with such a great and inspiring event. Everyone can make a difference to help protect our planet and we all have a key role to play.”
And organiser spokeswoman Jennifer Clements, of WWF-UK, said: “We’re thrilled that Dumfries and Galloway Council will be taking part in WWF’s Earth Hour this year and hope that they’ll inspire many others to get involved.
“By taking one simple step to switch off, WWF’s Earth Hour is a chance for all of us to come together and send out a global message about protecting our planet.”
