DIY sos as couple transform pal’s home

A PENSIONER’S house has finally become a home thanks to a Corrie couple and the kindness of strangers.

Chris and Paula McBryde reached out to Dumfries and Galloway folks via Facebook, asking them to donate items to transform the near empty home of Dumfries pensioner, Bob Watson.

The Corrie duo posted on the ‘Dumfries and Galloway: For Sale, Free and Wanted’ page, appealing to locals to donate anything they could spare, from towels, chest of drawers and shelves to paint and kitchen and bathroom accessories.

But they were most keen to get a bed for the pensioner who had been sleeping on a single futon, using a lawn chair as a headrest.

Chris said: “I’ve known Bob for 20 years, he’s a family friend, we have him round for Christmas. “His house was just a bit dull and really needed a lick of paint, a bit of brightening up and a few home comforts.”

Since the Facebook post went live last week, Chris has been inundated with offers of free furniture.

He said: “I am blown away by the response – humanity at its finest. “The response has been phenomenal and most importantly . . . we got a bed. We’ve been offered lots of other stuff too.”

The couple, with the help of friend Karen Armstrong and their daughter, had planned to do up Bob’s house while he was on holiday, but he arrived home early to a half finished house and was over the moon by the work so far.

Chris said: “He arrived back two days early, so we never really got everything finished, however his house looks ace and is a great improvement from what it was.

“We still have stuff to finish off, which we will do over the coming week.”

He added: “We are very proud of our achievement and Bob is proper made up, we hope this can make his life healthier and easier to keep on top of things.”
