Funding grants to groups

THOUSANDS of pounds were this awarded to support the work of groups across the region.

Councillors met in Annan Town Hall to discuss applications from across Annandale and Eskdale seeking a slice of their budget.

Each application was looked at by a scoring panel who scrutinised it in terms of impact, need, demand, engagement, partnership working and a financial situation and scored it accordingly.

* Elected members looked favourably upon an application from Mossburn Farm for a learning with horses project and gave £2475.

* Plans for new play equipment for The Haggs in Ecclefechan received £2158, 67.

*Robust action against invasive plant species were praised by councillors at the meeting and the project, operated by the River Annan Trust, was awarded £5488.

* £202 was agreed for the Royal Four Towns Golden Years Club, which plans to provide social interaction, particularly for those who live alone, through events in the village hall.

* Lochmaben Children’s Gala was awarded £737 to help towards gala day events, entertainers and clothing for principals.

* Moffat and District Gala Committee are to receive £1583 towards gala expenses.

* And Ecclefechan Day Centre were successful in their bid for money towards replacing storage heaters.

Members agreed to allocation funding from the ringfenced day centres fund.

However, not everyone was lucky and Lochmaben and District Community Initiative failed to gain any financial help following an assessment of their application.

The scoring panel had found that the organisation has uncommitted reserves of £7000, which the panel considered sufficient for existing needs.

Moffat Classic Car Rally, organised by the Scottish Rootes Enthusiasts, was also unsuccessful with a bid for £3000.

The panel noted that as the rally is entering its 19th year and each year attracts almost 1000 entries, it might consider self-sustainability.
