Martin Starr, Lorna Steel, Ryan ‘Biff’ Smith and Lindsay Currie from the town’s Tesco store are aiming to drive around 22 stores within the same group to raise cash for charity and honour the memory of colleague Vicki Gordon, who died suddenly last month.
Explaining the origins of the bid, Martin Starr said: “The JMA Trust did 42 (Scottish Football League clubs) in 42 hours, and that’s where the idea came from.
“They were so successful doing what they did, that there was no point in doing it straight afterwards.
“We looked to put our own spin on it, and that’s why we chose to do something that would represent Tesco.
“And there are 22 stores in our group, so that’s how it came to be 22 in 22.”
Setting off next Friday afternoon, the team are aiming to visit 22 stores including Lockerbie, Annan, two Dumfries stores, Stranraer, Kilmarnock, Lesmahagow, Airdrie, Bellshill, Galashiels and Peebles.
They will look to collect cash at each store, where staff are being invited to present them with a forfeit.
And the entire journey will use a 1999 Nissan Micra.
Martin said: “It’s to make it even more challenging. Obviously, I’m quite a big bloke and Biff’s a big bloke as well, so I thought it would just look funny us all cramming into this wee car.”
Money raised will go towards Lymphoma UK, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.
Martin said: “I was diagnosed three years ago with a rare lymphoma condition, and I’ve been doing charity work since I got diagnosed.
“The other two charities are Tesco charities.”
And the event concludes next Saturday at 7.30 pm, with a special evening held at St Andrew’s Social Club in Annan, with local singer and Tesco employee Ben Stubbs set to perform, plus a disco and raffle.
