Tributes to Tesco cat

THE DEATH of a cat which was a fixture at a Dumfries supermarket has sparked a fundraising push.

More than £700 was generated in just two days, after XL was run over in the car park of the Tesco Extra store at Cuckoo Bridge on Saturday.
And on the fundraising page set up in memory of the grey cat which greeted shoppers at the store’s entrance, one donor said: “RIP XL! It always brightened my day seeing you at the doors of Tesco!”
Another said: “Tescos won’t be the same now XL won’t be there to greet us. RIP wee man will miss you so much xx.”
The fundraising page has been set up by animal lover Lorraine Renwick from Lochside, who together with store employee Senga Hannah set up a shrine for XL when learning of his death on Saturday.
Lorraine, who owns six cats herself, said: “It happened just after 12 pm. I got a message at about 12.30 pm saying the cat had been run over.
“It was my friend’s partner who found the cat and then took it to XL’s owner, Sarah (Sloan).”
Lorraine already ran a Facebook page devoted to ginger moggy Fudge, which has also been a fixture at entrance to the Tesco store.
Explaining how the decision to raise money in XL’s memory came about, Lorraine said: “Everybody was talking about doing something, so I thought we might as well set up a GoFundMe account and see how far we can get in memory of XL and give it to Cats Protection to help other cats.
“That’s how it started, and the donations just kept coming and coming.”
Describing both XL and Fudge as ‘lovely cats’, Lorraine added: “They brighten up somebody’s day when they’re going shopping.
“It’s a tedious task going shopping in the first place, but they’ve made it a bit more enjoyable.”
