Man admits dog cruelty

A MAN who raised concern among onlookers as he suspended a dog in the air by its collar and then dragged it on its stomach along the ground, has had the animal taken away from him.

The two-and-a-half-year old collie was obviously in distress and was crying and yelping, fiscal depute Jennifer McGill told Dumfries Sheriff Court this week.
And Sheriff Brian Mohan ordered the forfeiture of the dog and remanded John Edwards, 54, in custody for a month for background reports.
Edwards, of Queensberry Square, Sanquhar, on Wednesday admitted causing the dog unnecessary suffering in Thornhill on Tuesday and seizing it by the head and repeatedly shouting at it.
The fiscal depute said that because of the public’s concerns, police were called and the dog was taken to an animal rescue centre.
Solicitor Liz Dougan said Edwards had had the dog for about two years and had had it with him while staying at a friend’s home overnight.
She said Edwards was planning to get a bus back to Sanquhar in the early morning, and the dog had been scared of traffic.
