Lunch invites in bid to beat loneliness

A CARAVAN park in Beattock who opened their doors to flood victims last winter have now turned their attention to helping the elderly.

Moffat Manor Caravan Park are inviting the senior population of Moffat and Beattock for a free lunch once a month – even offering to arrange their travel too.

In a bid to tackle loneliness the park will host the special meals on the last Thursday of every month.

Richmond Wight Estates, who own the site, already have ties with Dowding House, where they provide free afternoon teas, and also work with the British Legion.

Managing director Chek Whyte said: “We are trying to create a community with the aged were they can come and meet friends at our lovely clubhouse at the park, talk all afternoon and have some free lunch on us.”

He added: “We’re trying to get elderly people together to enjoy themselves and also share worries with others. Hopefully they will look forward to these Thursdays.

“We decided to act now to do something to help senior citizens as there has been so much in the news recently about them being lonely and cut off from society.”

Their inspiration came from the Silver Line charity, a special helpline for older people providing advice, information and friendship to the elderly.

Mr Whyte said: “When we became aware of this latest initiative, we decided to act, although many of us have known for a while that something needs to be done. It starts at community level.

If we all do something small it will make a huge difference.”

* The free lunch will take place on the last Thursday of every month at the park’s Alfred’s Bar and Bistro.

The company have made arrangements with the Stagecoach’s 11.20 am service, which departs from Moffat High Street at that time, to drop off outside the park and pick up directly outside the park at 2.08 pm.

Any seniors who plan to attend are asked to first reserve their place by calling the park’s marketing manager Mandy Layden on 01683 300313.
