TROPHY TIME . . . Emily Davies, Atlanta Mason and Ami Barber-Fleming
And the DG Cheer squad’s high octane performance earned them a trophy at the Future Cheer’s Superhero Spirit Challenge held at Braehead Arena in Glasgow last Saturday.
The talented youngsters were up against 11 other cheerleading programmes from across the UK with a total of 49 squads competing.
Representing Dumfries and Galloway were the DG Dynamite juniors, DG Excelsior seniors and DG Synergy senior stunt teams.
Synergy were the most successful scooping a first place for their action packed routine. The judges praised their entertainment value and said the five-strong side had ‘contagious’ energy and enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, Dynamite secured a fifth place finish after a clean routine with no penalty points; and Excelsior finished fourth, with one judge complimenting their obvious love of cheering.
Dozens of supporters travelled to Glasgow to support the boys and girls.
DG Cheer head coach Krista Miller, who is a former British National Champion coach, was really pleased with their athletic debut on the competition circuit and how they handled the pressures of training and the event.
She said: “I am so proud of them. I was so pleased to see cheerleaders jumping for joy after their routines knowing they have done their best; to see mums, dads and everyone welling up with pride because they know it means so much and to know they have done it for themselves, for their team and for the entire wider community is such a powerful feeling.”
Cheer coach and cheerleader Atlanta Mason added: “It’s wonderful to see how much our club has grown in the last two years, which has been possible through the passion of our participants, the support of our cheer families and the D and G community.
“We are so excited to continue to reach out to young people and offer them something a little new and exciting in our community.”
The DG Cheer programme started two years ago and training sessions take place at the David Keswick Athletic Centre in Dumfries. New members, aged three years to adult, are welcome. To find out more e-mail [email protected] or visit their Facebook page.
