Praise for blood biker in 500 mile mercy mission

A VOLUNTEER from Lockerbie has been praised for his efforts helping a sick baby boy .

Scott Anderson, pictured, is a motorcyclist with Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes (DGBB) and responded to a call out on Monday night.

He drove 500 miles down to Coventry to take an urgent sample to a lab there.
And despite his ten hour emergency stint, primary school teacher Scott was back at work the next day.
He has been praised widely and warmly on social media – including by the mum of the poorly newborn baby.
Stacey Hossell, from Stranraer, revealed that her son Daniel, who was born last week, is being treated at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for suspected meningitis, amongst other things.
Following a lumbar puncture on Monday, his sample needed to be rushed to Coventry – and in stepped the blood bikes group with rider Scott Anderson and controller Mark McFern.
Group spokeswoman Jaclyn Jardine yesterday said: “DGBB do not know who the samples belong to or what they are being tested for due to patient confidentiality, but getting to learn of little Daniel and how the charity has been able to help him has brought many of our team to tears.
“The team at DGBB wish Daniel a speedy recovery and would like to thank the people of Dumfries and Galloway for their support, kind words and donations – without them we could not keep this essential, life saving service running.”
The story has touched thousands of people across the region and the DGBB Facebook page was yesterday inundated with comments and support.
Sharon McLellan from Dumfries, wrote: “I know Scott and how hard his day job is. Brilliant, selfless work from a brilliant and selfless organisation. You are all amazing.”
Julie McKie added: “What an amazing story, an amazing team and a truly amazing guy!”
And a former pupil, Wayne O’Shea, of Lockerbie, said: “He’s a good man, he was my teacher at school and now my son’s teacher, one of a kind, has the time for anyone.”
Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes was set up to provide a free, out of hours service to the NHS.
It is a charitable organisation run by local volunteers to deliver essential blood and urgent medical supplies between hospitals and healthcare sites in south west Scotland and sometimes beyond.
