But the Scottish SPCA have stepped in and are caring for the seven-week-old female otter, found next to a road in Springholm on July 24.
With the cub named ‘Trickle’, it is now being cared for at the Scottish SPCA National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross where it is described as making steady progress.
Centre manager Colin Seddon said: “We think Trickle’s mother was likely moving location and has either dropped her or left her behind by accident.
“Trickle is taking milk from a bottle and is progressing well.
“Hopefully she will move onto solid food in a couple of weeks time and then we will just have to wait for another cub of a similar size to come in so they can be raised together and eventually be released.”
