Belgian driver in court

A BELGIAN bar and restaurant owner attending a rally in Scotland has appeared in court at Dumfries on charges of careless driving and assaulting a woman.

Jean Pol Borguet, from Lasne, near Brussels, pleaded guilty to driving carelessly near Bankend while negotiating a corner and colliding with a car driven by a 66-year-old woman and being in possession of a lock-knife in a public place without reasonable excuse or authority.
But the 72-year-old denied that at Bankend he assaulted a woman, aged 64, by punching her on the body and repeatedly punching her on the head.
Trial on the assault charge was fixed for later in the year with an intermediate hearing set for October 21 and sentence on the two charges which he admitted being deferred to the preliminary hearing.
Borguet, who faced the court with an interpreter, was allowed bail and excused from attending the preliminary hearing.
