£24k drugs haul after outcry

DRUGS with a value of £23,650 have been seized and ten people arrested in a crackdown by police in Newton Stewart.

Heroin, MDMA (ecstasy) and cannabis were among the drugs found by police, who say they have responded to concerns from within the community.
Newton Stewart Police Inspector Gavin McHallum said: “Officers have reported that a number of local people have voiced concerns regarding the amount of drug abuse there is within our community and the detrimental impact this is having.
“Substance misuse has also been identified as one of our local priorities and we have made a promise to tackle those who bring harm to our communities.”
He added: “As a result of these concerns we dedicated some time to look at this problem and over the last few months we have taken enforcement action against a number of those involved in drugs.”
Police say the action involved 18 street searches, ten of which resulted in the recovery of illegal drugs.
In addition to the ten arrests, 16 people were reported for being involved in the illegal supply of drugs.
And in addition to the drugs themselves, a total of £2040 of cash was seized.
Insp McHallum said: “There is no doubt that we are aware of some of those involved in this illegal trade but we don’t know everybody or every detail in relation to their illegal activities.
“If you witness something of concern please report your observations to us and do not automatically assume that we know about this.”
He added: “We need your information.”
Anyone who has information that can assist the police can visit Newton Stewart police station, call the non-emergency 101 number, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
