But first the town’s community council are calling on locals to get involved and come up with ideas on how best to honour the town’s Olympic medalists David Murdoch, Anna Sloan and Claire Hamilton.
Ever since the triple medal haul at the 2013 Winter Olympics in Sochi, talk has been rife in the town of honouring the Olympic trio.
The idea of transforming the two town entry roundabouts by decorating them with ornamental curling stones was previously mooted.
However, at this week’s meeting of the community council worries were expressed that decorated roundabouts could prove distracting and easily damaged.
Member Bud Little said: “Just the other week a tractor ended up on one of the roundabouts and people clip them all the time. “Yes, the roundabouts are an eyesore, butIthink it would be better to level them and putatribute to the curlers in a safer place.”
Community councillor Ian McLatchie is keen to see action. He said: “Annan have their halfnetter, Border towns have their Cornets and Lockerbie has nothing, despite the fact we’ve got three Olympic medalists and even more Olympians to boot.
“It’s disgraceful that we have been talking about doing something for so long. “The Winter Olympics were more than two years ago. Let’s not wait until the next games roll round to do something.”
Annandale North Community Councillor Stephen Thompson said that councillors had met in the past to discuss tribute ideas.
He said: “A project like this does need to be community led. The town need to want it and the town need to decide what’s the best way to pay tribute.
“Roundabouts have been discussed in the past. I know they are an issue in the town, but there might be a better idea out there.”
In a bid to get ideas and feedback from the community on the best way to honour the Olympians, the community council are hosting a town meeting next month at the town hall.
Urging people to come along, Mr McLatchie said: “This is a chance for people to have their say. “I personally want to see as many town groups such as the Pool Trust, Rotary, Scouts come along as well as individuals. “Together we can think of something really good — and make it happen.”
A meeting will take place on Tuesday November 15 at Lockerbie Town Hall at 6.30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and offer their ideas and input.
