Firework safety call

FOLLOW the firework code - that's the message from the region's police and fire services ahead of Bonfire Night.

Officers will carry out extra patrols locally this week and will be spreading the safety message.
Sergeant Stuart Burns at Dumfries said: “We are currently working with community safety officers across the division to deal with increase in calls we experience at this time of year due to anti-social behaviour involving fireworks.
“Our aim is simply to keep people safe in order that they can enjoy what should be a memorable experience, for all the right reasons.
“The misuse of fireworks will not be tolerated and apart from the anti-social and nuisance element, it can be outright dangerous.”
He is encouraging anyone setting off fireworks to follow the code, including:
* keeping them in a closed metal box and taking them out one at a time.
* keeping pets indoors and warning neighbours if you intend to hold a fireworks display.
* using only designated sites for bonfires.
Sgt Burns added: “Make no mistake, we aim to make our presence visible and will deal robustly with anyone who is out to spoil the fun for others by their anti-social and often reckless behaviour.”
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the fire service reiterated the police message and added: “We’ll be working closely with Police Scotland and other community partners over the weekend to ensure a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night for everyone.”

* To find out about designated bonfire sites locally call DGFirst on 03033 333 000 and to request a home fire safety visit go to www.firescotland.gov.uk.
