Holocaust survivor shares his story

PUPILS and parents from around Dumfriesshire attended a talk from a survivor from the Holocaust on Tuesday evening.

Austin Friars school in Carlisle hosted the event featuring Harry Bibring, pictured.
It was attended by 200 secondary school pupils and their parents from Austin Friars.
History teacher Caroline Hay said: “It was a privilege for us to welcome Harry Bibring to our school and his testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced.
“We are grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for co-ordinating the visit and we hope that by hearing Harry’s testimony, it will encourage our students to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and make a positive difference in their own lives.”
Mr Bibring discussed his childhood in Vienna and the effects of Nazi propaganda in Austria, which he saw and his family endured.
Through his discussion he explored the parts of his life such as segregation, discrimination and the fear that his family lived through during the Nazi occupation of Vienna.
The testimony was followed by a question and answer session to allow students to better understand the nature of the Holocaust and to explore its lessons in more depth.
Mr Bibring ended his talk with a plea to the pupils to learn valuable lessons from the Holocaust that any kind of discrimination or prejudice can, and still does end in tragic consequences.
