Ban on poultry going outdoors

POULTRY and other bird-keepers across the region will have to keep their flocks indoors for the next 30 days.

A legally-binding restriction has been imposed on both sides of the border as a precaution against avian influenza.

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone has been imposed and covers all of Scotland and England.

The step follows a significant number of reports of the disease causing deaths among wild birds in mainland Europe.

Officals stress the control applies to both large commercial flocks and those with only a few ‘hobby’ birds.

Scottish Rural Affairs Minister Fergus Ewing said: “We have declared a 30-day prevention zone as a precautionary measure to protect Scotland’s valuable poultry industry, particularly in the weeks before Christmas.

“It is important to stress that there has been no cases of this strain detected in the UK.”
