Late night Lochmaben blaze 'suspicious'

A LATE night blaze in Lochmaben has been branded 'suspicious' by police who are keen to trace two men sighted near the area.

Fire crews were called to attend the fire at a garage/workshop in the town late on Wednesday night at around 11.10 pm.

Three fire crews attended the scene and the blaze was extinguished in the early hours of this morning.

No-one was injured in the fire however the property was extensively damaged as a result.

The fire caused extensive disruption in the area and a number of houses were evacuated at the time of the blaze and a number also suffered loss of power after the fire.

Detective Sergeant Hugh McCombe said: “We are treating this fire as suspicious and are carrying out door to door enquiries in the immediate area.

“We are keen to speak to two men who were seen in the area of the garage in Castle Street at around 11 pm last night.

“We also want to hear from anyone who may have been past the garage which is on Castle Street, not far from the junction with Welldale Place.  Anyone who may have any information which might help us catch those responsible is asked to call us at Lockerbie on 101.”
