DETAILED layouts and designs for a new supermarket in Gretna are set to be approved next week despite ongoing objections from the community.

Following securing planning permission in principle in 2012, The Gretna Green Group Ltd have submitted further information about their plans for the 2.3 hectare site on land north of the Old Toll Bar.
And it will go before the council’s planning applications committee in Dumfries on Tuesday with a recommendation for approval.
However, Gretna and Rigg Community Council have objected and raised concerns about the impact the proposed food store, associated car park and petrol station would have on the town.
They said: “Since the original planning in principle was granted, a further Class 1 foodstore has been approved. This brings the total number of food retailers within the village to four, more than adequate for the resident population.
“The centre of Gretna forms the main area for local shopping, a full range of retailers available to shoppers, butcher, baker, fruit and veg, newsagent. These stores would be detrimentally affected by this development.”
Concerns are also raised about an increase in traffic and road safety.

Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
