Callum crowned Rotary young musician champ

The Rotary District 1020 final was held at Annan Academy’s performing arts centre last Thursday, and was organised by the school’s head of music and south west YMOY convenor Jamie Brand and by Rotarian Joyce Wylie.
Club president Mrs Wylie said: “It was a lovely night, and it went really smoothly.”
Rotary Club of Annan secretary Graham Simons served as MC, skillfully capturing and maintaining the attention of the audience and the competitors.
Eleven extremely talented young musicians and singers competed to go through to the
District Grand Final to be held at the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh on SundayMarch 12.
Adjudicators Raymond Budd and Alex McQuiston said it was very difficult to pick winners from such a wealth of talent, and that the performances demonstrated the abundance of talent from young people in the region.
However, it was CallumWalton on tuned percussion, and sponsored by Rotary Club of Annan, who was ultimately named the Young Musician.
Praising his performance on four xylophones, Mrs Wylie said: “He was outstanding, really.
“The company really just erupted after he played.”
She added: “It’s a shame for anybody following, but the standard was really excellent.
“It’ll be even better when they get up to Edinburgh; they’re like professionals.”
Runner-up was David McDonald on accordion, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lockerbie.
Winner of the Young Voice was Maeve Reekie, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dumfries, and the runner-up was Ellen Carr, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright.
