Dumfries oil up at auction

A 19TH century painting of Dumfries, pictured above, is among a batch of Scottish works going under the hammer in London next month.

‘A View of Dumfries’ was painted by J Edgar in 1885 and is an oil on canvas.
It is expected to get between £6000-£8000 at the sale at auction house 25 Blythe Road, in the capital on April, 5.
Notes in the sale brochure say: “This impressive panorama of the town of Dumfries is a historically important record by a local artist of his home town. While the identity of this artist is unclear, the Edgar family has been prominent in Scotland, especially in Dumfriesshire, for hundreds of years. Robert Edgar (c. 1669-1759) wrote An Introduction to the History of Dumfries.”
It continues: “Modern Dumfries retains many of the buildings shown here, including the Old and New Bridges and the handsome red sandstone Sheriff s Court with its striking green copper roof. Quite apart from the artistic and aesthetic merit of this painting it is also a fascinating study of the changing face of a town over time.”
