Scottish champs heads for Dumfries

DUMFRIES is set to host national racketball championships - coming to a club in the town this weekend.

The 6th Scottish National Racketball Championships are being held at Laurieknowe Squash and Racketball Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The club which opened on School Lane just over two years ago was selected by Scottish Squash and Racketball Ltd to host the event, which has attracted entries from Scotland and from England including the current British number two Ted Jeal from Kent.
Jeal was the Scottish Open Champion in 2015 and was runner-up in 2015 and 2016 in the British Racketball Championships.
Club chairman Keith Gristwood said: “It is a privilege to be selected to host the Scottish National Racketball Championships 2017 and in doing so it provides recognition not only of the quality of the club’s facilities but also of our ability to host and organise major racketball events.”
He added: “We are particularly grateful to all our sponsors without whom we would be unable to host such a prestigious event so early in our club’s history.”
Racketball is the fastest-growing racket sport in the UK and is suitable for all ages.
It provides a total cardio-workout but is less taxing on the body than squash and has been proven to be one of the best forms of exercise.
Laurieknowe SRC has attracted a significant proportion of its membership from women who mostly play racketball.
The championships include the Men’s Open and age-group events from over-45 up to over 65-year-olds.
Competition begins at 10 am on Saturday, continuing through until 6 pm, and from 10 am on Sunday until around 4 pm.
Admission is free and the club encourages spectators to come along and see what top-level racketball is all about. Snacks and beverages will be available.
Further information on the championships including the draws and about Laurieknowe Squash & Racketball Club can be obtained from the club’s social media sites.
