ELECTION '17: Lib Dems name Ferry as DCT candidate

AN ECONOMICS and communications expert is to stand for the Scottish Liberal Democrats in the Dumfriesshire Clydesdale and Tweeddale (DCT) constituency.

John Ferry, 40, who runs a media relations, editorial and marketing consultancy, is married with two young sons and lives in Peebles.

He is chairman of the party’s Mid Lothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale branch and chairs the Borders Policy Forum which helps shape the party’s strategy at national level.

Mr Ferry, who says he looks forward to campaigning in Dumfriesshire, was brought up in Airdrie and attended St Andrews University where he gained a degree in economics.

He then worked as an oil and gas analyst before training and working as a financial journalist.

In his spare time he is a keen cyclist and is a qualified mountain bike leader.

Mr Ferry says he believes 2017 could mark a turning point for the Liberal Democrats in the constituency seeing a resurgence in areas which were once Liberal strongholds.

He suggested that the party’s consistant pro-EU and single market stance was allowing them to tap into a wide pool of the electorate and that he would campaign for the votes of “all moderates who value tolerance and internationalism.”

The Westminster hopeful continued: “I will put forward a muscular liberal argument that directly opposes both the nationalism that is leading us down the route of a damaging hard Brexit, and the nationalism that threatens to tear apart the UK.”

Mr Ferry added that the Liberal Democrats were ready to form a strong opposition to the Conservatives and also provide a strong voice at UK level for Scots, including those who supported the SNP at the last general election, but did not aspire to independence.
