MEETING HIS MATCH . . . Rory MacPherson, right
Forest worker Rory MacPherson was driving near Kagyu Samye Ling monastery at Eskdalemuir on Monday when he slowed to a halt to avoid running over a little otter leaping around on the road.
Twenty-four-year-old Rory whipped out his phone to capture the unusual sight as he got closer to the creature.
He said: “I stopped because I didn’t want to hit whatever it was in the road and I was really surprised to see it was an otter.
“You don’t often see otters, never mind get the chance to photograph one so I seized the opportunity and approached him/her. I didn’t expect what happened next …”
Not amused by his presence, the energetic otter started trying to nip his toes, which were luckily protected by some sturdy boots.
And when Rory made to retreat at full pelt from his nibbling assassin, he was closely pursued by the squeaking otter, who followed him back to his truck.
Afterwards Rory shared the video with his friends on Facebook and it’s since been shared over thousands of times and viewed by over one million people, thanks to being picked up by media big wigs.
Shocked at its popularity, Rory said: “The attention has been mental. I’ve had phone calls all day from newspapers, the BBC, ITV and magazines. It’s crazy how much attention it’s got.”
And the rollercoaster did not stop there, for on Tuesday night Rory was shocked to discover that even Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling had shared Rory’s video with her 10 million plus followers on Twitter.
Scottish Woodlands worker Rory said: “Everyone at work is laughing. I’m sure I won’t hear the end of this for a very long time.”
