Entrants in the annual Dumfries Civic Pride School’s Competition were asked to write about a famous person from the town — with more picking the multi-millionaire DJ over the national bard.
Morris Service from Dumfries Civic Pride said: “We had about 3000 entries from all the primary schools.
“Eight primary schools involved in the competition, and normally what we would do is go round each of the schools and present the prizes.
“But because there were so many schools we decided we’d bring the schools to us rather than us go to them.”
And on Monday, pupils gathered at Georgetown Community Centre hall for the presentation of prizes across three sections.
P1 to P3 pupils had been given a colouring challenge, while P4 and P5 pupils were challenged to write an acrostic poem using the word ‘Environment’.
And it was the older P6 and P7 pupils who were asked to write about a famous person from Dumfries.
Mr Service said: “Who would you think would be a famous Dumfries person? It was Calvin Harris who was the top notcher, and the second most popular was a player for Queen of the South.
“Robert Burns was there, but a bit low on the list.”
Mr Service has praised the quality of entry in the competition this year.
He said: “It always poses a problem to the people in our committee who are judging the different parts.”
