Queen of the South unveil signings

THE REBUILD for next season has begun at Queen of the South - as a defender and a goalkeeper have put pen to paper.

Manager Gary Naysmith this week unveiled stopper Callum Fordyce from Dunfermline, and Alan Martin from Dumbarton, who he hopes will be a safe pair of hands.

Primarily a central defender, 24-year-old Fordyce is capable of playing anywhere along the back line, and Naysmith admitted that this versatility was a factor in bringing him to Palmerston.

Having spent the last two seasons at East End Park, Fordyce began his career as a youth player with Hibernian before moving to Livingston where he spent much of his professional career, before a spell with Clyde.

Naysmith said of the signing: “I’m delighted to have Callum on board, once we knew he was available we acted quickly to get him tied up.

“He was as keen to join us as we were to have him, so it didn’t take long for us to conclude the deal. He is 24 years old, so comes to us at a good age, and he’s also a good professional.

Goalkeeper Alan Martin has played south of the border and for Scotland U21’s during his career, and last season won the Players Player of the Year at Championship rivals Dumbarton.

Naysmith said: “Alan had a very impressive season last year and was arguably one of the most consistent goal-keepers in the Championship.

“While it was relatively straight forward and easy to conclude the deal to bring Callum to the club, we had to work really hard to get this one over the line.

“Other teams in Scotland as well as clubs in England were interested in securing his services, so I’m delighted the hard work has paid off and he sees his future with Queen of the South.”
