Halfway point for DG One repairs

A MAJOR milestone has been reached in the £10 million project to fix structural failings at the region's flagship leisure centre.

At the halfway stage of an 18-month project, work to strip back the troubled DG One facility in Hood’s Loaning has now been completed — with the focus now turning to rebuilding the structure.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “The building works at DG One continue.

“Currently, work is being done on the rotunda.”

He added: “Following demolition of a number of internal structures, we’re now in the reinstatement phase of the project.

“A report outlining progress will be presented shortly to the appropriate council committee.”

DG One opened to the public in 2008, but was closed in October 2014 to allow a full inspection of defects within the £17 million building — including serious pool leakage and excessive heat loss.

Legal proceedings had been threatened against Kier Construction Limited over the problems, but the local authority has insisted that out-of-court mediations offered the chance of the best resolution.

A settlement was reached with construction firm Kier Construction Limited last year, with McLaughlin and Harvey Limited enlisted to carry out the remedial works.

And work to address the failings began on September 5, with the project set to include demolition of the pool and strengthening of the roof.

While work is being undertaken, the gym has been relocated to Loreburn Hall and a temporary swimming pool established in the car park of Dumfries Ice Bowl.
