Great Big walkers stop off to see Dumfries projects

A TEAM of walkers connecting people and communities across the UK stopped off at projects in Dumfries last week.

Members of The Great Big Walk are journeying around the country meeting the people behind a range of inspirational community projects, and on Friday paid a visit to Let’s Get Sporty, The Stove Network and Sandside Community Garden project.

The Great Big Walk is made possible by the National Lottery and run by Eden Communities, and walker Josh Quigley said: “Over the past week we’ve had the pleasure of meeting lots of different social projects and community groups who are doing great work in their local area.”

Let’s Get Sporty is a social enterprise based in Georgetown and chairman Kevin Somerville said: “It was a great opportunity for us to showcase the work we do at Let’s Get Sporty using physical activity and sport to improve our community and help young people into employment.”

The Stove Network in Dumfries High Street are an artist-led organisation which is delivering a National Lottery funded community project in Lochside and Lincluden.

And with The Stove joining up with the Sandside Community Garden Project for their Great Big Walk visit, Matt Baker said: “The number, diversity and ambition of community projects in Dumfries just now is incredible – we are all feeding off the energy of everyone else and it was great to be able to welcome the Great Big Walk into the middle of all that.

“Sandside Community Garden is one of the most inspiring projects I know, and we are delighted to be able to support it through our Creative Futures project in North West Dumfries.”

Five teams of walkers set off on May 29 heading to the five corners of the UK, finishing this Sunday to join celebrations for The Big Lunch.
