Phoebe plans charity gala ball as thank you

A TEENAGE girl and her family are planning a gala fundraising ball in Dumfries next year.

Phoebe Murray, 15, from Penpont, wants to raise money for the Cure Crohn’s Colitis charity after she was diagnosed with the condition aged 11.

And she’s also going to be collecting for the Solway Synchronised Skating club, of which she is a member, saying it’s a thank you for the support she’s had from them.

Tickets for the event on March 3 at the Easterbook Hall are selling well but the schoolgirl is now appealing for sponsorship and raffle prizes and hopes local businesses and individuals will step up and help.

It’s the latest in a string of fundraisers she has organised, that have included a coffee morning, charity boogie, race night and non uniform day – so far making £5000 for Cure Crohn’s Colitis.

Phoebe said: We would like to raise awareness and funds for a cure for this horrible disease, as well as raising funds for my local ice skating club where I am well supported and spend a lot of my time doing something I love.”

Sharing her battle with illness, the youngster said: “I experienced things that I wish to never experience again, as well as 16 weeks in total of no food intake at all.”

She has endured weeks of medication, a birthday cake ban, frequent hospital appointments and endless invasive procedures.

She currently receives an intravenous infusion every eight weeks, saying: “I have just started my third year of it. This was so scary to start with as I need a cannula in every time to get the medicine into me, I’m now a pro and go with it”

And she recently had some good news: “In my most recent appointment my consultant said my crohn’s had cleared up.

“My family and I were so happy.”

Determined to still ice skate despite her illness, she competed in the British Skating Championships earlier this year at Nottingham.

And she’s now throwing herself into making sure the ball is a success.
