Police stated that there had been a number of accidents after the widely forecast wet and then icy conditions overnight.
A spokesman at Dumfries said: ”From Stranraer in the west through to Mouswald in the east, and Moffat in the north, nearly a dozen collisions were reported, between 7.50 am and 9.20 am.
”Collisions were reported on the major routes of the A74(M), A75 and A76 as well as a number of other roads.
”Only a few minor injuries were sustained and the majority were non-injury crashes.”
The longest delays were on the A75, near Cleughbrae, east of Collin, where an articulated lorry and a car towing a caravan were involved in a collision.
Police Scotland and other emergency services attended and the road was closed to through traffic with long tailbacks building up.
The driver of the lorry received minor injuries.
Sergeant Doug Millar, Roads Policing Unit, said: “Since the early hours we received numerous calls about icy roads across the region. In the very early hours heavy snow was reported on the A76 at Kirkconnel, where lorry got stuck, and also on the A74(M) near Moffat. Clearly winter is here and we are again urging drivers to take extra care on our roads.
”Drive to the conditions and listen to the weather forecasts, and check out your route, particularly if travelling outwith the region, where you may well experience different weather and road conditions.”
Police repeated their general warnings for those using the roads to drive according to conditions and take great care in the winter weather.
