Drop in road smashes

THE number of road traffic accidents attended by firefighters in Dumfries and Galloway saw a big drop in the six months up to September 30.

Hamish McGhie, local senior officer with the SFRS, said that the number of road traffic collisions attended had dropped from 55 in the last six months of 2016-17, to 42 this year. He said this was the lowest recorded for three years, with this quarter recording the second lowest quarterly figures over the last five years.

Officer McGhie, who is also the chairman of the Road Safety Partnership, said: “The service will continue to work closely with partners in the Road Safety Partnership to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities to within all road user groups and aim to meet the Scottish Government’s Vision Zero target. We have carried out a number of road safety activities in the area in a bid to reduce the likelihood of people, particularly youngsters, being involved in a road traffic collision – which as we know can have devastating consequences.”

He added: “We will continue to help people to stay safe both at home and whilst travelling through our ongoing campaigns in the local community.”
