SMOKERS who throw their cigarette ends away could face £80 fines from this month.

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s community safety team are targeting irresponsible litterers and their officers will be out throughout December targeting hotspots in towns and villages. They will be handing out free portable ashtrays, or ‘stubbies’, to members of the public seen smoking. These can be placed in a pocket, wallet or handbag and used to safely dispose of a cigarette and then emptied into a larger ashtray or bin at a later date.
