Two windfarms approved

PERMISSION has been given for two more windfarms to be built at either ends of the region.

Councillors have given the green light for an eight turbine windfarm between Eskdalemuir and Langholm. Members of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s planning applications committee approved the revised plans for the scheme at the Loganhead forestry plantation. Developers Loganhead WF Ltd are part of Muirhall Energy, who in 2015 originally submitted a proposal for 13 turbines on the 359 hectare Loganhead site, 3.8 km west of Langholm.

However, that was amended following a public consultation. Their new plans involve eight turbines, each 135m high, and generating enough electricity annually to power over 15,888 average Scottish households.

Construction on the new windfarm is expected to take 14 months.

Within ten kilometres of the location there are five other windfarms either operational or approved. These include Minsca, Solwaybank and Ewe Hill.

Meanwhile, the committee also gave the go ahead for 12 wind turbines at Windy Rig near Carsphairn.

But it was a close call for the scheme by Element Power Northern Europe Developments with councillors voting nine in favour and eight against. Cllrs Jane Maitland and Dougie Campbell had tried to get it stopped on cumulative and visual impact grounds.

Both approvals are subject to a range of conditions and legal agreements.
