Stormy night

STORM Georgina has left some homes without power this morning and caused flooding on roads across the region.

A tree was blown down near the B722 outside Waterbeck in the early hours of the morning, knocking out localised electricity supply. Engineers were on site by daybreak and power was restored later in the morning.

A spokesman for Scottish Power confirmed 50 homes across the region were off supply after the strong winds through the night.

And the police have warned motorists about flooded roads and have closed the Whitesands area of Dumfries due to rising water levels.

A spokesman said: “If you encounter flooded roads on your journey, it’s important you don’t try and drive through them. It’s often impossible to tell how deep the water is or if it has damaged the roadway below. Only 4 inches of flowing water is enough to get a car stuck. Remember that turning around and finding a different route is a better option than being stranded on the roof of your car for hours.”

Meanwhile, flood gates were installed in Langholm after a flood warning for the River Esk. However, Dumfries and Galloway Council confirmed that water levels are now dropping in the town and said the river level will continue to be monitored.
