Police Scotland say they received a report of a ‘large-scale’ incident in the centre of Newton Stewart around 11.55 on Saturday night.
A fight was described as being in progress near to the Galloway Arms Hotel in Victoria Street.
But as officers arrived on the scene the group dispersed.
Inspector Gavin McHallum, based at Newton Stewart Police Station, said: “Witnesses spoken to so far have intimated that as many as up to 20 people, both male and female were involved in the disorder, which included fighting.
“I would ask anyone who may have witnessed this event, or who may have even been caught up in it to get in touch with us at Newton Stewart on the 101 number.”
He added: “At this stage I have no reports of anyone being injured in this incident. We are reviewing CCTV in the town.”
