Swallow reports flying into newsroom

MILDER weather and the arrival of spring have seen the first reports of swallow sightings flying into this newspaper office.

One of the first came from Ecclefechan dog food dealer and coal merchant Mick Carruthers, who states around a dozen were swooping around his family coal yard a fortnight ago.

There have been further sightings in the last few days in Dumfries, Moffat, Langholm and on the outskirts of Annan.

Another early sighting of the birds, which have completed their arduous journey after wintering in southern Africa, was from our Country Matters contributor Andrew Taylor.

He spotted his first swallow of the season near the River Esk at Longtown on the morning of April 7.
