Top turnout for time trial

RIDERS from across Dumfries and Galloway gathered in Ecclefechan last week for the second round of the DG League time trial series.

Launched last year, the league aims to encourage and develop participation in cycling in the region, and round two of this year’s series was hosted by the Fechan Flyer Cycle Club.

Damp conditions did not deter the 33 riders taking part, who were there representing clubs from across the region including Dumfries Cycle Club, Hoddom Velo, Fechan Flyers, Old Luce Club, Dooleys RT, Vitus pro cycling, coveryourcar.co.uk RT, Annan Youth cycling club and Studio Velo.

Established only five years ago, this was the first time Fechan Flyers had hosted a league time trial, and there was no shortage of willing volunteers from the club taking part in the event and also helping with marshalling.

The 11.5 mile route ran from Ecclefechan through Kirkpatrick Fleming, turning at the roundabout and heading back to Ecclefechan.

Riders assembled at the Cressfield Hotel, which provided a warm and dry location for registration and a final gathering for refreshments and results.

Lewis Martin from Castle Douglas’s Studio Velo took the top spot in the men’s trial, just ahead of Gavin Shirley from Dooley’s RT.

Lewis and Gavin are now tied at the top of the league standing after two rounds.

Melanie Martin, also of Studio Velo, was the fastest finishing female rider, which Rebecca Saunderson secured her spot at the top of the Futures League as the fastest finishing youth rider.

Micky Warbeck from Fechan Flyers said: “Thanks go to all riders, volunteers and organisers for this very successful evening – the feedback from all was extremely positive.”

The next league event is a ten mile time trial at Glencaple on May 30.
