Kirstin get set, go for charity close to heart

A WOMAN who battled leukaemia as a child is now raising money to help send deserving children on the trip of a lifetime

Kirstin Shaw, 32, from Dumfries, is taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon next week to raise cash for Dream Flight.

The charity sends deserving children on a once-in- a-lifetime trip to Orlando in Florida and it is especially close to NHS worker Kirstin’s heart, as she bene ted from such a trip in 1996.

She said: “I was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of four and never given the full clear – in remission.

“It impacted on my childhood, I was taken out of school a lot for hospital appointments and check ups but I never let it have an impact on my further education and have been fortunate enough to have achieved a BA business and HRM with distinction, Post Graduate Diploma HRM and MsC HRM all whilst working full time.”

She added: “I am supporting Dream ight. This char- ity pays for sick children to experience a holiday of a lifetime in Orlando.

“The charity is obviously very close to home, I was taken to Orlando as a child by Dream ight after I had made a recovery, however unfortunately not all of the other children I went with survived the illnesses they suffered from.”

Kirstin has spent the majority of 2018 busy training hard for her 26.2 mile capital run, joining running club the Dumfries Harriers and even overcoming an injury.

Looking to raise £350, she has set up a JustGiving ac- count at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kirstin-shaw and is appealing for donations.
