Queen for a day . . . again

FROM Olympic athletes to committee members themselves, Lockerbie gala queens past have gone on to do some amazing things.

This year’s queen supreme, the lovely Miss Robyn Cloy, is the 77th queen in a long line of superstar ladies, with the first being elected in pre war 1913.

Gala queens have been consistently elected since 1954, following a 13 year Lockerbie Gala and ROM gap.

And this year committee member Lynsey Armstrong, who held the role in 2007, is encouraging other former queens to don their sashes and follow this year’s queen’s float as part of the parade.

She said: “Lockerbie Gala is such a special time for me and my family.

“I was gala queen in 2007, my mum, two aunts and cousins have also been gala queens in previous years.

“It’s such a privilege to represent the town and the gala queen is, I feel, one of the most important principals.”

She added: “After chatting with ex queens in the last few years it was noted that we don’t see many of us wearing our sashes on Gala Day.

“I feel that all ex queens should celebrate the role that they had and be part of the day, as well as the ex cornet’s lasses, cornets and standard bearers that are on horseback.”

And Lynsey is appealing for as many queens as possible to join her in next Saturday’s parade, complete with sash.

They are invited to meet at Sydney Place at 12.15 pm.
