The 32-year-old player from Dumfries was hurt on the head during an apparent fracas at the side of the pitch.
The incident happened during a North / South Lanarkshire League fixture between Lochmaben Amateurs and Chapelhall Thistle FC from Airdrie.
Police Scotland say the disturbance was believed to involve a number of people.
A spokesman at Dumfries said: “The victim received what was described as a punch.
“After the game he attended Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where, after examination, it was found that he had a fracture to a bone in his face.”
The match at Lochmaben’s Whitehill Park, which was watched by visiting and local spectators and officials, carried on and resulted in a 3-2 victory for the home side.
Club secretary William Howat explained the player, a striker, did not realise the seriousness of his injury at the time and continued to play.
He said: “The boys were upset by what happened. It just came out of the blue. The player was allowed home later from the hospital after an x-ray and treatment but will need to go back.
“We’ve four games left this season and I doubt if he will be fit to play in any of them.”
